The new product in Phu Tan mat-craft-village

( Update: 23/08/2018 )

Being a fairly new product, but folded-mats in Phu Tan mat-craft-village (An Cu commune, Tuy An district) have been popular. This product-line is expected to evolve in the direction of serving tourism.

The product has been in the market for nearly one year, but pretty well known and loved. The product was found and brought to Phu Yen province by Mr. Nguyen Van Tay, who has spent many years weaving mats in Phu Tan commune.

Folded mats are also woven by machine, with size as large as the conventional type; then cut into pieces depending on the mats size; the edge is sewn and the rims are grafted into the completed product. Folded mats also have many other sizes, from 0.8m to 1.6m, arranged into a compact 3-piece mat.

The price for each is much higher than that of a regular one from 30,000 dongs to 40,000 dongs, but only 1/3 the price of one made in Thailand. Folded mats have many advantages like the high durability, sophisticated colors and lines; besides, they are foldable into smaller size, convenient in cleaning and moving. Therefore, consumers are increasing favoring this mat model.

Folded mats are not only used for bedding but also widely used in tourism thanks to its compact, handy, easily-movable feature. A mat with 0.8m to 1m-size, folded 3 times, is only about 26cm to 27cm, which is very comfortable for traveling, camping and outdoor activities. However, Phu Tan mat product is quite nice, but still not as sharp as the ones for tourism in other places.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tay confided, “When doing market-research in other localities, I found in some tourism-cities, the product are popular with everyone thanks to its compact, light-weight, easily movable feature. Therefore, I was nourishing a plan to produce folded-mats for tourism. Currently, I have found some agents as Da Nang, Nha Trang and some other localities to consume this product. However, the product is still pretty rough and unfinished due to lacking specialized equipment”.

According to Mr. Tay, to make the nice-smooth-sophisticated products, it’s necessary to invest much more equipment, including pressing-machine, sewing-machine with 2 needles (for folded mats). In addition, the facility also plans to invest more embroidery-machines for sewing mats with white flowers and seat cushions embroidered with letters and texture on surface. Currently, the product-lines are popular, especially in tourism-cities.

However, due to lacking capital to purchase equipments, it’s very difficult to develop new product-lines. “The market for traditional mat products is dwindling, making it even harder to compete. Therefore, if the product-line is developed for tourism, it’s optimistic for the scalability of expanding the consuming-market. We look forward to being a part of the State’s funding-support to purchase equipment, develop new product-lines, contributing to strengthening and developing the traditional-mat-weaving village”, Mr. Tay confided.
