Ben Tre Province deploys a project: Establishment, management and development a certification trademark “Desiccated coconut of Ben Tre Province”

The People’s Committee of Ben Tre Province has issued Decision No. 555/QD-UBND on allowing to deploy the project “Establishment, management and development a certification trademark Desiccated coconut of Ben Tre Province” on 27th March, 2014.
There has been a rapid development in the coconut processing industry of Ben Tre Province in the last 10 years. It consumed about 85.74% of total coconut harvests in Ben Tre and a part of raw material from the neighbour provinces which accounted for a large of proportion of the processing industry. Currently, there are more than 40 types of coconut products in Ben Tre Province which have been exporting to 65 countries and territories around the world. Of the coconut-based products, desiccated coconut is one of the high economy-value products. Although there is a lot of potential for the output market of desiccated coconut, its trademark of Vietnamese enterprises in the world has not yet known. To protect and develop trademark as well as contribute to enhance the value of this local special product, The People’s Committee of Ben Tre Province has been many policies, the action programs to support coconut farmers, enterprises for maintaining and developing the copra-based products processing industry. It is essential and urgent to create and deploy the project “Establishment, management and development a certification trademark Desiccated coconut of Ben Tre Province”. The result of this project will be a foundation to raise the prestige of products in the market, control the quality of products and enhance the economic efficiency in the copra processing industry of Ben Tre Province.
Based on Decision No. 761/QD-BKHCN issued on 9th April, 2013 of Ministty of Science and Technology on approving the list of the projects under The selected support program of developing intellectual properties for implement by 2014 – 2015; and Decision No. 2686/QD-BKHCN issued on 30th August, 2013 of Ministty of Science and Technology on approving funding from the budget of the central science and technology to selected projects with management of the local authorized by the Government under The selected support program of developing intellectual properties for implement by 2014 – 2015. The People’s Committee of Ben Tre Province has issued Decision No. 555/QD-UBND on allowing to deploy the project “Establishment, management and development a certification trademark Desiccated coconut of Ben Tre Province” on 27th March, 2014.
The purpose of this project is to use the tools of intellectual properties for social and economic development, contributing to enhance the value of products with certification marks; namely identifying the criteria, characteristics to be certified of desiccated coconut with ceritification mark “Desiccated coconut of Ben Tre Province”. Since then, the procedures about setting up the right of intellectual properties for ceritification marks, establishing organizational systems, media systems and management conditions and exploiting the value of a certification trademark “Desiccated coconut of Ben Tre Province” which is effectively registered for protection, use, control and exploitation in reality and establisment a model to widely apply for local specific products.
The content of the project is created and deployed on its objective and creteria under the support program of developing intellectual properties, regulations of Law of intellectual properties on ceritification mark protection to be suitable for the local reality and the need of coconut growers, desiccated coconut processors and traders in Ben Tre Province.
A product to be achieved certification trademark NHCN is desiccated coconut product from Ben Tre Province.
The total cost of impleting this project is 709 million VND, including 440 million VND from the budget of the central science and technology and 269 million VND from the budget of the local science and technology.
This project has been deployed from April, 2014 to December, 2015.

The People’s Committee of Ben Tre Province gives a task Ben Tre Coconut Association and the project Master to submit its profile; Deparment of Science and Technology to be responsible for managing and monitoring the progress of carrying out the project which meets the state rules about topic management, science and technology projects, and timely makes a report the result of implement to the permanent council of Science and Technology of Ben Tre Province.
