Using Honey in Soap Making

( Update: 18/09/2014 )

Honey is a very sought-after additive for soap making for many reasons. Honey has a long and romantic history - it is one of the oldest "ingredients" known to man. Women (and a few savvy men) through the ages have bathed in and used honey to keep their skin and hair radiant:

Honey in soap making
Honey is also a wonderful additive to soaps, and you don't have to be a beekeeper to use it. It impart's a light, warm, sweet scent, the added sugar content helps increase the lather, and acts as a humectant. I generally use about 1 tbs. per pound of oils and add it at a very very light trace. You want to make sure it gets completely incorporated into the soap before your trace gets too thick. Honey will turn your soap a light tan color. This, similar to what occurs when you use milk in soap, is from the chemical reaction with the extra sugars in the soap.

BENEFITS

  • Honey has a sweet delicate scent.
  • Honey adds lather to soap and moistures your skin.
  • Adding honey is a great way to add therapeutic, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties to your natural soaps.

There are wondrous bee and flower soaps that sooth and pamper skin. Adding honey will increase the benefits of your natural soap and it slightly tint the color of the soap.

The following handmade soap recipes all have the added bonus of honey.

These lye soap recipes will moisturize, may prevent acne because of the antibacterial properties and some studies have suggested that honey actually works to counteract wrinkles.
