Coconut tree is a traditional and featured plant of the riparian South of Vietnam. For along time and over many generation, coconut tree has been attached to people’s life. Although the coconut has not created any economic breakthrough, it is still considered very economically potential, bringing regular and stable income to farmers in rural areas. This is why Tieu Can farmers are expanding coconut tree growing area in their localities.

At present Tieu Can district have more than 2,440 hectares of coconut growing land with about 620,000 trees, which is 200 hectares (equivalent to 50,000 trees) more than in 2003. Largest areas of coconut tree are found in Long Thới, Tân Hòa, Tân Hùng, Hùng Hòa, Tập Ngãi and Ngãi Hùng communes. Total annual coconut harvest is estimated about 25 million fruits. If average price is 2,000 VND/fruit or about 24,000 VND per dozen, farmers growing coconut tree in Tieu Can district will have income more than 50 billions VND per year. This is an attractive and ideal income for many farmers in rural areas. Over the past 5 years, as domestic consume and export of dry and fresh coconut strongly increase coconut price is also relatively high (about 36,000 VND per dozen in 2007 up to 56,000 VND per dozen in early 2008; then 24,000VND per dozen by end of 2008) life of coconut farmers in Tieu Can district have been better off. In addition, coconut trees bring give a lot of by products: coconut leaf used for fuel, for making broom, coconut shells to weave rugs, to produce activated charcoal, trunk of coconut trees use for house building…
In recent years, the Tra Bac company has put into operation its Rach Lop coconut fiber factory in Cho hamlet, Tan Hung commune enabling the business of many people buying coconut fruit for producing dried coconut meat, milk coconut, coconut charcoal, coconut fibers as semi-processed materials for factories’ final export products. Buyers also come to buy and transfer coconut fruits to sell to foreign vessels in large quantity. This is a happy sign for material area and income for coconut farmers in Tieu Can district.
Thanks to stable price of coconut fruit, in recent years many farmers in district has expanded the coconut growing area. In some place, people grow coconut on top soil mounds on rice field and along canals. For new coconut grown area, types of short trunk, quickly grown, early bearing fruit and high yield are choosen. For coconut areas from 5 to 10 years old, people are now piloting mixed cacao trees to increase household income (in Tan Hoa and Tap Ngai communes).
